Mobile World Congress 19 is here, and for the next couple of days we’re going to get our hands on some shiny new smartwatches, fitness trackers and hearables, plus the latest in the world of VR and AR.
MWC 2018 wasn’t exactly awash with wearables, with the show mostly dominated by VR with some interesting concepts and prototypes, giving us a glimpse at the devices we can expect to don in the future.
Below, we’ll keep track of all the latest at the show. You can also take a look at what we’re expecting.
HoloLens 2 unveiled
After some teases, it’s finally here. Microsoft has unveiled the second-generation of its augmented reality headset. As rumored, it’s lighter and smaller than the predecessor. It even comes with double the field of view. There are also eye-tracking sensors and support for even more advanced hand gestures. All of this is running on a Snapdragon 850 Compute Platform processor. The bad news? It’s still for businesses at $3,500.
Hands-on with Nreal’s Light smartglasses

Announced back at CES 2019, we finally got our hands on with Nreal’s AR glasses. It’s not as advanced as the HoloLens 2, but it’s AR that gives us hope that consumer AR isn’t far away. The form factor is the real winner here, as you’re not going to feel weird about wearing these at home.
Nubia Alpha is a “wearable smartphone”

Foldable displays are a big thing at MWC. Huawei unveiled the foldable Mate X to take on the Samsung Galaxy Fold. But that exciting folding technology also means that there could be a smartphone that wraps around your wrist, and the folks at Nubia are showing off the Alpha, which is exactly that. It was a prototype back at IFA and now it’s a product for release later this year. It’ll be â¬549 for the 4G eSIM model and â¬449 for the Bluetooth model.
MyKronoz has new smartwatches and an AirPods alternative

MyKronoz is back with some new budget tech. It’s got the ZeNeo, a new smartwatch/fitness band hybrid with a built-in speaker and microphone. It’s $59.99 and will arrive in April. There’s also the ZeRound 3 and Round3 Lite – they’ve got heart rate trackers. They’ll come in at $99.99 and $79.99, respectively. Finally, there’s the ZePods, a cheap alternative to AirPods that’ll run you $79.99.
More Samsung Galaxy goodness

We’ve seen the new Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit, but we’ve only got hands-on with one of them – the Watch Active. We’re looking forward to seeing whether we can get some hands on time with the Fit at MWC. We also want to see whether the Fit e makes an appearance at MWC, seeing as it wasn’t even mentioned by Samsung at the Unpacked event.
All things Vive
HTC’s Vive Cosmos VR headset was officially unveiled at CES in January, but we didn’t have a chance to get our hands on it. While a consumer version of the Cosmos isn’t expected to launch until the second half of 2019, MWC could be our first opportunity to find out what the headset has to offer.
As a reminder, the Cosmos uses inside-out tracking, so you don’t need to worry about installing sensors all over your home. HTC says you can use it on the go, but it’s a PC first setup. There are two cameras on the side of the headset, an integrated speaker and it comes with two new controllers. It will also showcase a new user interface, so there’s plenty more for us to learn about the Cosmos and what it’s capable of. There’s also the new Vive Focus Plus, which comes with more advanced controllers. Here’s hoping we get our hands on that, at least.
A follow-up hearable from Sony
After the Sony Wena Wrist smart straps landed earlier this month, it’s become even more unlikely that we’re going to see a smartwatch or fitness tracker from the company at this year’s show.
However, there’s still a slight chance it uses the MWC platform to unveil the next iteration of last year’s hearable, the Xperia Ear Duo. The wild-looking earphones, shown above, didn’t exactly blow us away when we held our extended test, but we’re holding out hope that Sony has gone back to the drawing board and prepared the next iteration.
More Snapdragon Wear 3100-powered watches
Last year, Qualcomm announced its next generation Wear 3100 processor that aimed to make your Wear OS watch last longer among other improvements. So far only a handful of watches have included Qualcomm’s new tech, including the Fossil Sport (pictured above) and new luxury timepieces from Montblanc and Louis Vuitton.
Two out of three of those smartwatches are out of reach for most, so MWC is a great time for more affordable options running on Wear 3100 to show up. We haven’t seen Wear watches from Huawei and LG for a while now, so this could be the ideal time to give us something new.
Oppo enters the smartwatch fray
Oppo is another tech company making waves outside of its native China and that’s largely been down to its feature-packed smartphones. According to its CEO Chen Mingyong, though, smartwatches are on the Oppo agenda, with confirmation that the wearable device is one it’s going to start making and launching. Oppo hasn’t given any indication as to how near it is to making that a reality, but MWC could be the place to give us a glimpse at what it’s working on.
